In 1959 A.D.(2016 B.S)Tribhuvan university was established with the following motives.
* To produce competent workforce needed for the total growth and development of Nepal
* To provide quality higher education and learning
* To provide protection and maintain national culture and tradition
* To focus on in extensive, empirical and timely creation of knowledge and research in the subjects of arts, science, technology and vocation
 It is a non-profit making autonomous university funded by the Government of Nepal. On January 8, 2013, the government of Nepal has principally made a decision to authorize Tribhuvan University as the Central University of Nepal.Tribhuvan University is the prime national university of higher education in Nepal. It is the eldest of the five accredited universities operating in Nepal(Kathmandu university, Pokhara University, Purbanchal University, Nepal Sanskrit University and Lumbani Bouddha University). The Central Administrative Office and the Central Campus of the university are situated on the north eastern facade of Kirtipur, an old,a traditional and charming town five kilometers outside of capital city Kathmandu. There are 38 central departments and 4 research centres. The university at Kirtipur is expanded over an area of 154.77 hectares (about 3042 ropanis).
Tribhuvan University execute its courses only by using its constituent campuses right before 1980. As the volume of the students eager to get higher education was raising continuously, it was very difficult for the university to allow for all the students in the constituent campuses. This predicament resulted in the establishment of colleges in the private sector. From 1979 –80, it began giving affiliation to private colleges to perform different courses at different levels. 1053 private colleges extended all over the country have already obtained affiliations from this university.
Since its beginning,Tribhuvan universty has widened its courses indifferent professions. There exists 5 technical institutes and 4 general faculties.Tribhuvan University  provides proficiency certificate level courses only in nursing. It has a lot of course offerings in Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. Tribhuvan University presents M. Phil. and Ph.D. degree in different disciplines both at the Technical Institutes and Faculties.
 Tribhuvan University has 7966 teaching faculty and 7230 non-teaching staff including the support staff in its constituent campuses. The total number of employees is 15196.
