The University of Hong Kong (commonly called HKU or Hong Kong University) is a public research university instituted in Pokfulam, Hong Kong, established in 1911 at the time of the British Colonial period. The University at the beginning brought into existence in an effort to contest with other Great Powers that had launched higher learning institutions in China early in the twentieth century.
Hong Kong University is the territory’s longest-existing institute of higher study and also an globally accepted, research led, comprehensive university. While determining the potency of its heritage and traditions, HKU also gets involved in frontier research and academic ventures that indicate and address the demands and desires of a fast changing, knowledge-based world.HKU providing ever-greater efforts in education, research, leadership and public engagement, domestically and universally.
On March 16, 1910, Sir Frederick Lugard, the then Governor of Hong Kong, laid the base structure stone for the University.On March 11, 1912, the University was legally opened, and Arts, Engineering and Medicine will probably its first Faculties. The Faculty of Medicine been developed from the Hong Kong College of Medicine, established in 1887. In 1937, Queen Mary Hospital established and has provided an excellent service as the University's teaching hospital subsequently. Before the occurrence of the 2nd World War, which would probably make educational activity plans of all four faculties Arts, Engineering, medicine and science to a halt.
The University of Hong Kong, as a prominent international institution of higher learning in Asia, aims to captivate and support exceptional scholars from around the world through quality and advancement in teaching and learning, research and knowledge exchange, causing the advancement of society and the development of leaders by having a global appearance, regional significance and engagement with the rest of China.
Dr Sun Yat-sen, often perceived as the founder of modern China was its early alumni.
